ALBUM REVIEW: JUNGLE'S VOLCANO OF SUMMER VIBES

BY: JESSE ZAPATERO

Jungle's album, "Volcano," erupts with a blend of 70s Soul, 90s house beats, and hypnotic 80s loops.

The energy throughout the album is infectious, compelling listeners to hit the replay button. This London-based duo, consisting of Tom McFarland and Joshua Lloyd-Watson, has consistently delivered feel-good music in the past, earning acclaim for their unique blend of disco and soul.

Volcano, the fourth studio album, maintains Jungle's signature style with head-nodding funk breakbeats, soulful guitar strumming, and euphoric disco choruses. While confidently produced, the album, falls into the familiar territory of Jungle's established formula, lacking the raw emotion that defines disco and soul.

Tracks like "Candle Flame," "Dominoes," "I've Been In Love," and the super-funky "Back On 74" set the stage for Volcano's release in the summery backdrop of 2023. The album leans towards a more danceable quality compared to their previous work, "Loving In Stereo," embracing a warm and hazy summer feel.

The album's music videos, expertly choreographed by Shay Latukolan, add another layer of enjoyment, visually portraying the lyrics in intriguing ways.

"You Ain't No Celebrity" featuring Roots Manuva on adds a notable touch, but I wish there was a more substantial contribution. This album is remarkably enjoyable, but it somewhat sacrifices the versatility found in the previous album, leaning towards a more predictable sound. Yet, the album accomplishes its goal of spreading red-hot doses of summer vibes. The fusion of funk, soul, and danceable tunes, resonates with a personal appreciation for mid-tempo R&B grooves.

Despite its familiarity in sound, the album successfully captures a lava-rushing feeling of dance and heartbreak. The infectious beats of "Don’t Play," the seductive nature of "I've Been In Love," and the upbeat nostalgia of “I’ve Been In Love” contribute to an enjoyable experience.

Jungle's "Volcano" has undeniable energy and danceable tunes making it a noteworthy addition to their discography. With the red-hot dose of summer vibes, the album manages to leave an impression, inviting listeners to enjoy the groove.
