JUDITH HILL: On the Rocks and High Notes

Music soul sister sister Judith Hill talks to us about her story, her music and her lush and nostalgic style.

Tell us about your story. Who is Judith Hill in a nutshell?

I’m a soul sister and lover of all cultures.  I compose symphonic music, perform all over the world with a funk/soul jam party and many participate in many unique collaborations to bring hope and inspiration to the world through the arts.

Where are you originally from? Tell us about your hometown.

I’m from North Hollywood, California.  Essentially, I’m a Valley girl that grew up in the sunny streets of LA.  A bit Emo, and a bit of a social outcast growing up.

How is it coming from a family of musicians?

Living in a family of musicians is a beautiful thing.   There was so much talent around me all the time. I was lucky to hear so much good music in the house especially when musicians and singers came over and recorded.  It was a funky good time!

Aside from singing, do you also play any other musical instruments?

I play the piano and guitar.  And sometimes the bass, especially when I’m writing in the studio.

Would you say that music has been and is still a huge and influential catalyst in your life? In what ways did music made a positive impact in you?

Music is definitely that way I communicate with the world.  Its where I find my voice. They say I’m very quiet in person.  But, I’ve always managed to declare my message very powerfully in a song.

Let’s talk about the Voice for a bit. How would you describe the atmosphere within a talent competition like “The Voice?” Would you suggest young and aspiring artists to join in any competition?

Being on that show is actually fun.  It is a great way to make friends and build your audience.  It’s like summer camp. I do recommend it for aspiring artist.  However, there is a Hunger Games aspect to it, so they have to be prepared because it is a reality show.

Based form your experiences from the show, what message would you tell young and aspiring artists who are planning to join competitions?

The show is a great way to discover who you are to America.  You find out very quickly the types of songs and the certain personality aspects that either resonate or don’t resonate with people.  It’s a great way to listen and learn.

What do you think is the proudest moment in your career so far?

Every show is the current proudest moment of my career.  I feel blessed to do what I love and connect with the rest of the world every night on stage

How do you balance your time?

My day consists of performing, writing, mixing, designing, etc…  I have to juggle so many responsibilities. That’s my LA life. On the road, I’m doing a show, then traveling to the next city.  Depending on how intense the tour is, sometimes I have very little time for sleep and leisure, so it’s important to stay healthy and take care of my body.

Describe Judith Hill’s Style.

I love classic soul, vintage 70s, oriental flavors, deep and rich, bright and colorful.  Futuristic minimalism. Lush and nostalgic.

What is your dream project?

An installment of art, fashion and music.  I’m beginning this series with the first show, Golden Child.  It is a modern ballet/ live concert that celebrates diversity and inclusion with a powerful story told by a cast of talented dancers.

Top 3 music in your playlist right now.

Bill Withers at Carnegie Hall, Sly Stone’s Fresh Album, Jazmine Sullivan...because she’s amazing!

Any advice you can give to any artists/singers out there?

Stay consistent and always continue to share your talents with the world.

If you’re going to have a book what title would it be?

Prism

If you will be given the chance and opportunity to help a specific charity, what would it be and why?

With Golden Child show, I am raising money for the GO Campaign.  This is a charity that provides resources including food, shelter, education, and support  for underprivileged children around the world. I’m very passionate about the well-being of children as well as planting seeds of love in the minds and souls of young people.  This is one way we can overcome racism and hatred in the world.
