Who is Sanja? If you can describe yourself to us with any of your photos/art, which one would it be?

I'm a 26 years old half Croatian photographer living in Amsterdam. I love to travel the world and experiment with creating otherworldy self-portraits.

When did photography / art start for you?

I started photographing when I was in Highschool. I was 15 and I remembered just having a simple pocket camera with me.

How would you describe your art?

I would describe my art as surrealistic, cinematic yet alienating scenes while playing with our relation to the subconscious.

What inspires you? Is surrealism part of it?

Leonard Cohen, the Brian Jonestown Massacre, Dada, Mondriaan, Russian 30's paintings, Oscar Schhlemmer, Hipgnosis etc.

Where did you draw your artistic education from?

I studied photography at the Royal Academy in the Hague at The Netherlands!

Give us a glimpse inside your processes. How do you usually produce / create your art pieces?

I work in different ways, sometimes I sketch what I want at home, or I make my own costumes beforehand and then I'll go abroad to make my series. But sometimes I just go travelling and buy things on the road, and I react to the landscapes I drive by,

What is your most memorable project yet?

I really liked going to Scotland to film and photograph my dear musician friend Lucky Fonz III. It was my first music video and it was an absolute beautiful week filled with lots of hard work in the Scottish Highlands.

What is your most challenging creation and why?

I think the most challenging so far are creating the photos where I had to paint my body, myself outside, in the cold and wind where I stand naked alongside a road where cars stopped and watched me posing. Most of my photos are self-portraits.

Do you have any particular favorite from your portfolio?

No, I have a few favorite photos!

What is your dream Project?

That’s a good question, I think I have multiple. For example I would like to travel a long time and create landscape art along the way with large objects and people helping building it. That would be next level!

There is clearly some fashion influence in some of your works. Would you say that your art is influenced by fashion as well?

I try to leave out fashion as much as I can. That’s why I designed my own costumes. But people have said it before so I think that 'fashion vibe' is just in me.

What’s coming up for you in the next few months/years? What are your big plans?

In a few months i would like to make a new series, getting better in making things with my hands like costumes and objects is also something I would like to explore. And I would love to do an exhibition in Los Angeles!

Tell us more about your Self-titled book of collected works. What’s the timespan of the works included in the book? Does it contain unpublished materials as well? What inspired you to publish your book?

Most of the photos are made in the past 4 years. Yes when it came out there was an unpublished series in it. What inspired me is to make my work more accessible to people
