ALISUN ON HER MUSIC'S DEEP CONNECTION TO NATURE AND THE EARTH

Mexican-Cuban songwriter ALISUN spoke to A BOOK OF about her ever-evolving music, her deep love and care for the earth and nature, her art, dream projects and more.

ALISUN’s talent was recognized by Camila and she was invited on a two-year tour throughout the US and Latin America, showcasing her alluring voice. 2021 marked a special time in her life, releasing her first solo single “HYPOTHERMIA,” officially breaking her into the entertainment world. The indie/pop artist has defined her music as a magical and immersive experience, and to give continuity to her project, the magic continued with the premiere of a new song "THEY LIVE IN AND AROUND US".

Hi ALISUN. Tell us a bit about yourself.

Some things about myself: I love nature, I love learning from everything I can, and I try to pay extra attention to those who are voiceless in society/on Earth. I’m someone who sees people for who they truly are without judgment. I consider myself to be someone who tries to see the best in others so that I can give the best of myself to them at the same time. I consider myself an eternal student.

Tell us more about the premiere of AROUND THE WORLD (your 3rd recording single). What is it about, what inspired you to create it?

This song is really about listening to younger generations and the children—listening to their hopes and dreams in an attempt to make the world a better place for them to live in the future. I wrote this in response to Greta Thunberg’s speech about how our world leaders have let our generation down as well as all generations after us in regard to the climate crisis. I felt so impacted that a person of her age has such a strong voice for the cause that I had to make something out of it. I wanted to let her and others know that they are not alone and that there are people acting on real positive change, not just those saying they want it or projecting empty promises. The single is also a promise to my inner child and younger self because it’s something I’ve always cared about, and I want to make that version of me proud.

How would you describe your music?

I would describe it as ever-evolving: what is out and what is coming will continue to be more and more different with the same essence, if that makes sense. Every year I change and evolve, so I take that evolution with me through my sound’s creativity as well.

What are some of the challenges you faced in your career so far?

I suppose the greatest challenge is beginning this career in a genre that isn’t as popular yet. I’m building my own audience and allowing who I was when I wrote these songs to be present with me now, though I’m a few versions different from who I was at the time.

How did you rise above these challenges?

I have full trust in the Universe that everything happens in divine timing. Every step is important, every emotion is valid, and every piece is part of this grand puzzle of life.

What’s your proudest moment so far?

My proudest moment so far is definitely doing the inner work to become who I am now and with that, gaining a greater sense of confidence within myself and my art.

Where do you get your inspirations from?

The earth, always ❤️

What scares you?

Men.

Guilty pleasure?

Sleeping in as late as possible some days.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

To take all that you’ve learned and healed within yourself for yourself, that way it can also serve others.

What’s your ultimate goal?

To be a powerful force of love in the world, and to allow any generation who tunes in to my music to remember a bit more of who they are.

What are your dream projects?

I want to start a foundation that brings compost to dead Earth zones that we’ve destroyed in order to start healing the soil again and to have accessible nutrient-rich food.

Is there a skill / talent that a lot of people don’t know about you?

I create my own beverages semi often, and they don’t turn out too bad! Haha

Anything else that you want to share with the audience? Tour/Shows/etc.

My EP will officially be released in October; it’ll be the completion of what I wrote when I was 17!
