Let Me Introduce Myself
Hi, friends. It’s June! Some people mistakenly call me Joy because I smile a lot and when I’m excited my whole face lights up like a Christmas tree. Yes, the kind of Christmas tree with tons of presents underneath, wrapped in twinkly bulbs, maybe some glittery garland, and smells of pine and popcorn. I’ve been described as a female Buddy the Elf because I am a capable of loving life and Santa that much. This is true. I also appreciate hugs, kittens, zombie apocalypses, 90’s action movies, sparkly dresses, cosmology, the psychology of clothes, and cornbread. I freakin’ LOVE cornbread.
However, you and I both know that no one on this good earth is constantly shitting out rainbows and lollipops. It’s just not human. But I can see why we all get caught up in the ideal life. We are constantly scrolling from one perfectly curated page to the next photoshopped influencer, which are heavily blurring the lines of reality. Then you feel all depressed because you fall right into the comparison trap! I’m 100% guilty of this disease. Good news is that if I’ve learned some things from my spiritual journey called life. I’m seeing a pattern in people (my family, friends, clients, even strangers!) and in myself. Most of us want the same thing. We all want to be seen, heard, and witnessed as exactly who we are. No filters. Just footage in the raw.
So that is my hope for this column. Let’s treat it like an intimate conversation or a peek into my diary. Let’s be courageous! Sure, we will talk about style and fashion and love and light, but we’ll also celebrate the dark side that’s lost, angry, messy, and a bit f-ed up. I am also going to ask our featured guests about their soul’s calling, their fears, struggles, and what made them go from hot mess to... straight fire. (Ok, I tried saying ‘straight fire’ aloud just now because I’m binge watching Love Island, but I’m declaring it only works if you’re a rapper or have a british accent).
In any case, I’ll be chatting with our magazine’s featured celebrities, the creative forces behind our stories, and maybe even my mom. No one is safe! So sit back, relax, and stay tuned for the next episode.
For now I’m trying out this tagline for the column…
Welcome to Soulful Style, where shit gets real and we love you as you are.
