In this exclusive interview, read RJ’s journey as an actor, how Donald Glover picked him for the role of Clark County, his love for great, explosive action films, his source of inspirations, and why he chose The Alchemist as a book.
Hi RJ, what’s your story?
2011, the summer following my 3rd year of college, I came out to Los Angeles on a one-way ticket to visit for the very first time. Being born & raised in South Bend, Indiana, and having only traveled mainly in the midwest region(Illinois, Oklahoma, Michigan, Ohio, Wisconsin) and Florida, I thought that I would easily be able to get a summer job, and afford a ticket back home. After many unsuccessful attempts to secure a steady job, I eventually found myself working at CBS Television Studios for Dancing With The Stars as a transcriber & living with my cousin and his family. I went on to get discovered by a talent agent at my first wrap party, signing to my first agency in 2012. Now I'm doing what I've always wanted to do by means of hard work & patience.
What inspires you?
Honestly, I seek to find inspiration in everything. Everything. Cooking, movies, peers, music, dark times, fun times, fashion, animals, etc. I'm a sponge for inspiration.
How was it to be a part of ATLANTA? What’s the best part of playing Clark County?
Atlanta was and is a dream come true. When I found out that Donald chose me himself, I tripped out. The best part about playing Clark County was honestly how closely I was able to work with such an amazing cast & crew. I really had a great experience. Plus, I got to rap!
Tell us more about your character David Wright from Boomerang. How did you book the role? And how different are you from his character?
David is a disciplined, dedicated young pastor who preaches love & acceptance amongst other things. I went through the audition process to book my role on "Boomerang", then found out I was the guy for the job at an Emmy's party me and my friend snuck into. I can say that even though me & 'David' share similarities, David is a lot more invested in his religion. He's also more mindful and disciplined when it comes to his vices.
What do you love the most about your character David Wright from Boomerang?
I love how David can be so young, yet so disciplined. His leadership qualities are something to admire.
If you’re not acting what keeps you busy?
Being onstage, performing improv at the Upright Citizens Brigade, creating content for myself and others, training (strength, weapons, etc), hosting dope kickbacks, and hanging out with friends pretty much keeps me busy.
What’s your dream role?
Anything David Leitch or Michael Bay. I LOVE a great action film/tv show, and these guys have a great resume as far as action goes. Being in my own successful version of a "Bad Boys 2" or something like that would be SICK! I want to be in something that not many would expect, but many would love.
Out of all the roles that you’ve played, do you have any specific favorite?
I love all of the characters I've played. And there's many more to come. ;)
If you’ were a book, what book do you think would you be and why?
The Alchemist. I stay mindful of omens & my intuition, and I stay the course, no matter how rough it gets. Also, I learn from each obstacle & test.
If you can help any charity, what would it be and why?
I would help the Boys & Girls Clubs of America because they were there for me and my friends growing up. Through the BGC, I was involved in various sports, activities, learning experiences, and developed my love for computers & the arts. I love what the Boys & Girls Club has done for me & my friends. It helped develop me into the young man that I am today.
