ALBUM REVIEW: NAOMI SHARON'S DEBUT ALBUM "OBSIDIAN"

BY: Jesse zapatero

Naomi Sharon has graced the WORLD with her much-anticipated debut album, "Obsidian." This collection of musical gems, released under the OVO Sound label, marks a significant moment in Naomi's career, solidifying her position as a unique soul talent with universal appeal.

"Obsidian" is more than just an album; it's an exploration of rebirth, confrontation, and healing. The title itself, drawn from the protective gemstone, sets the tone for the album's overarching theme—shielding against negativity and piercing into darkness to reveal the truth. Naomi's vulnerability shines through, a refreshing aspect in an industry often marked by pretense.

Throughout the album, Naomi showcases a genre-defying sound that draws inspiration from a diverse range of influences, creating a rich and soothing sonic palette. The lead single, "Definition of Love," opens the door to an operatic and dramatic narrative, setting the stage for the emotional depth that follows. The album balances tranquility with haunting rawness, as Naomi's voice weaves through themes of love, heartbreak, and healing.

"Another Life," elevates the album with its fusion of alternative R&B and ambient house, demonstrating Naomi's ability to reshape sound. Each song feels like a chapter, with "Regardless" offering a Spanish-influenced guitar riff, show us her versatility. Co-written by talented collaborators, the track "Regardless" underlines Naomi Sharon's emphatic ambition.

My personal favorite, "Push," stands out as a captivating afrobeats duet with Omah Lay and its exploration of passion in a romantic relationship. The album's diversity is evident in tracks like this one.

The geographical and cultural roots embedded in Naomi's  DNA, with influences from the Caribbean and her upbringing in Rotterdam, contribute to the album's diasporic richness. The inclusion of elements from artists like Sade showcases a clear influence while adding a unique flavor to her sound.

At the core of "Obsidian" lies a profound connection to the protective and transformative qualities of the obsidian gemstone. The album serves as a musical sanctuary, absorbing and transforming negative energy into something beautiful and healing. The alchemical power of music is palpable, turning life's trials into a meaningful sonic journey.

Naomi Sharon's debut album, "Obsidian," is a true showcase of her artistry & vulnerability. It transcends genres, offering a universal experience while maintaining a personal touch. With the support of OVO Sound, Naomi's meteoric rise to R&B royalty seems inevitable, promising a future filled with global collaborations and boundary-pushing endeavors.
