ALBUM REVIEW: HALFNOISE SHARES A CREATIVE MUSICAL CANVAS IN CITY TALK

BY: JESSE ZAPATERO

Zac Farro, a multi-talented musician and founder of Congrats Records, introduces listeners to the world of halfnoise—a project born during his hiatus from Paramore. With each album, halfnoise allows Farro to explore new musical directions and showcase his creative versatility.

As I strolled to my favorite downtown LA coffee shop, I put on my headphones and started playing the new halfnoise album, City Talk. I instantly fell into this montage moment where I just wanted to dance with random people around me. This record exudes a vibrant energy, offering a breath of fresh air into the world.

Zac Farro, the mastermind behind halfnoise, embarks on a journey with City Talk, crafting a project that feels like preparation for conquering a fun-filled life. Farro, Paramore's original drummer, showcases his versatile musical skills in this self-produced album released through Nashville's Congrats Records.

City Talk draws inspiration from Japanese city pop of the 1970s and 1980s. The album opens with "Love & Affection," blending synth sounds and ethereal instrumentation, setting the stage for a great album.

Tracks like "Snip Snap" featuring unexpected jazzy breakdown and a tinkling piano.

My favorite track on the album is “The Dove Has Flown,'" which explores the transformative power of unexpected love. The song's heartfelt lyrics convey a sense of loneliness, ultimately transformed by the arrival of someone special, symbolized by the metaphor of a dove. The upbeat and optimistic tone emphasizes love's ability to bring positive transformation.

Zac Farro skillfully balances creativity with precision, ensuring that special effects, refrains, and vocals serve a distinct purpose. "Love Fire" and "Only You" showcase playful creativity while contributing to the album's overall cohesion.

"Today" serves as an amazing conclusion to the album, earning it a well-deserved 10 out of 10. The song encapsulates a profound realization of not wanting to give up on love, beautifully tying together the overarching themes explored throughout the album. Leaving us with a lingering sense of connection to the album's journey.

On the album halfnoise encapsulates the spirit of urban living, expressing feelings and reflections encountered during life's journey or moments spent with friends. Whether marveling at the vibrant city or introspecting during a leisurely walk, the music serves as a versatile soundtrack for various experiences.
