ALBUM REVIEW: CANNONS MESMERIZING DRIVE DOWN "HEARTBREAK HIGHWAY"

BY: JESSE ZAPATERO

Cannons artfully combines the breezy acoustic sounds of summer with contemporary synth elements, resulting in a captivating, dreamy ambiance.

Indie-pop trio Cannons has etched its name in the music industry by crafting a contemporary L.A. sound that seamlessly blends deep house music, indie-electronic, and '80s synth-pop, creating a uniquely atmospheric style. Formed in 2013 in the heart of Los Angeles, the trio comprises lead vocalist Michelle Joy, guitarist Ryan Clapham, and the multi-talented bassist and keyboardist Paul Davis.

Embarking on a journey that captures the essence of life, love, and everything in between, Cannons invites listeners onto the nostalgic and winding road through their latest album, "Heartbeat Highway." Inspired by their extensive travels and experiences from years of touring. Cannons has successfully curated a collection that aspires to be the perfect soundtrack for any adventure.

The title track, "Heartbeat Highway," sets the tone for the album, encapsulating the band's journeys thus far. It serves as a sonic testament to the special connections that have fueled both the track and the entire album, making it the ideal companion for those scenic drives where the road and music merge.

Among the gems in this project, "Can You Feel My Heart" stands out as a personal favorite & an exploration of heartbreak. The lyrics delicately navigate the pain and longing felt by Michelle, weaving a tale of confusion, slow passage of time, and the inevitable dissolution of love. Despite the sorrow, a resilient spirit emerges, hinting at the possibility of healing and moving forward.

"Desire," is another stand out track. This song bring you into the breathless allure of attraction, capturing the all-encompassing need for someone special. The '80s-inspired instrumentals and evocative lyrics contribute to the captivating narrative of being engulfed by desire.

Cannons also taps into the exhilaration of first love with the track "Crush."  Michelle's hypnotic vocals paired with the lyrics vividly portray the heart-racing euphoria and the joyous experience of falling headlong into love. The song encapsulates the mix of anxiety and excitement that accompanies the deeper emotions of affection.

While some may argue that Cannons' sound remains consistent throughout their discography, it's precisely this consistency that defines their musical identity. The tonality, polished sound, and dreamy atmosphere persist, creating a cohesive experience. It's admirable how Cannons has mastered the art of maintaining a signature vibe that works seamlessly across various settings – whether walking, driving, or simply unwinding.

The group's sound evokes a nostalgic callback to the days of peace under the sun. Tracks like 'Sweeter' and 'Always Will' transport listeners to a state of yearning, as if cruising down an empty Pacific Coast Highway with the album playing against the backdrop of the ocean waves.

While some may argue that Cannons' evolution appears stagnant, the undeniable allure of their hooks and the sheer enjoyment derived from their lyrics offer a counterargument. There's a certain comfort in the familiarity of their sound, a sentiment akin to putting on a Cannons record and losing oneself in a 40-minute reverie. In a musical landscape where change is often heralded, there's a refreshing embrace of the unbroken, allowing Cannons to stand as a testament to the beauty found in consistency.
