Tell us your story? Who is Karyta and what is the origin of your name?
My full name is Karyta Marcelo Santos, I'm 18 years old, a model, and a current student at Cal State Fullerton. I was born in Brazil and moved to the Bay Area when I was 8 where I stayed until I finished high school. Now I’m currently living in West Hollywood pursing both my academic and modeling careers. I don’t believe my name has any specific meaning, which deep down I wish it did so I could have a cool definition for you right now. However, I can tell you the story of how I got it. My brother was already 5 when my mom was pregnant with me and when the conversation arose about what i would be named he suggested Karyta and explained that it was the name of the most beautiful girl he had ever seen, his first love. So, he thought it only right to name me after her.

Where are you originally from? I’m originally from a small town named Goiania in central Brazil.
Tell us about your hometown. My hometown is pretty small and to most of us here very “third world”  but I love it. It’s where all my family (besides my mom and brother) live and where I lived most of my childhood years. It’s very cultured as is most of Brazil.

Where are you based? Which city do you see yourself in?

I am currently based in Los Angeles and honestly that's exactly where I see myself. I’d love to spend some time in New York City but I’m ultimately a Cali girl.

How did you get discovered as a model?

When I was in the 8th grade I randomly asked my best friend for a ride home, little did I know her older sister was a makeup artist, who would set up my first shoot and connect me to Scout Modeling Agency.

What inspired you to be a model?

As a child I always wanted to be a model, aside from being told “you look like you can model”, I knew it was something that i could excel in. Reading magazines, looking at random Ads or billboards, and watching shows like “America’s Next Top Model” made me feel inspired. I knew that through modeling I would be able to gain confidence and become a positive figure for other young girls with the same dream.

How long have you been modeling?

I’ve been modeling for a little over four years now.

What’s your favorite part in being a model?

My favorite part of modeling is witnessing and being part of essentially and art project. Seeing how a collaboration of different arts can make something beautiful.

Your most memorable experience in modeling so far.

My most memorable experience is walking into Levi’s headquarters in San Francisco and seeing a huge printed canvas of myself leaning against the wall. That's a feeling i’ll never forget.

How do you manage your time as a model?

I try to just stay very organized (to do lists, calendars, journals etc.) so that I don't get lost between modeling schedules, school schedules and just my regular life. It tends to get pretty complicated but prioritizing is definitely my way of getting through it.

If you can compare your modeling experiences with your favorite music, what would it be?

I would definitely say Hip-Hop because of there's always a different vibe or flow. At times things can be very up beat and happy, at others it can be loud and chaotic and sometimes even slow or mellow.

Your favorite food.

This is honestly the hardest question as I love all kinds of food equally, since I have to…I’d say sushi.

Book that you’re currently reading.

I’m currently reading “Y: The Last Man” and “The Woman I wanted to be”

Most memorable shoot so far.

My most memorable shoot was my first one, because it was amazing to me how comfortable and easy something I had never done before felt. I’ll never forget the rush that posing in front of a camera gave me, and continues to.

What else keeps you busy aside from modeling?

I’m currently working on my Psychology major, so that definitely keeps me busy.
What comes next after modeling?

I’d like to model for as long as I can, but I also have a dream of becoming a psychiatrist.

Any advice you can give to any aspiring models out there?

My biggest advice is to not give up and to simply believe in yourself. As corny as it sounds everything happens when its supposed to, how its supposed to, so don't ever give up.

Dream project?

I would love to be part of a project designed to make a positive stand impact on the world.

Dream Client?

If you’re gonna have a book what title would it be?

If you will be given the chance and opportunity to help a specific charity, what would it be and why?
If I had the opportunity to I would love to donate a substantial amount of money to UNICEF because they make a direct contribution to improving the living conditions of children and families living in high-risk or underprivileged situations.
